Common Community Vision for Greater Lowndes County

In May 2002, the U. S. Department of Commerce, Bureau of the Census officially designated Valdosta a new Urbanized Area. The Federal Highway Act of 1962 requires that urbanized areas have a Comprehensive, Continuous, Cooperative transportation planning process (3-C Process) and thus created the need for the Valdosta-Lowndes Metropolitan Planning Organization. Federal funding is channeled through the VLMPO for transportation projects and programs in the local area. The VLMPO conducts transportation planning for a Metropolitan Planning Area consisting of all of Lowndes County and the cities within it, as well as portions of Berrien, Brooks, and Lanier Counties. The VLMPO is made up of three committees; the Policy Committee, the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC), and Citizen's Advisory Committee (CAC). Each committee has regular quarterly meetings that are open to the public. Click the link to see the list of Meetings and Agendas.

Public Participation Plan

The VLMPO Public Participation Plan is an outline of the decision making roles and responsibilities of the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) to the public. The Participation Plan addresses the importance of public input and engagement in the transportation planning process and also provides information on relevant laws surrounding transportation planning. The MPO strives to ensure that everyone with a stake in transportation decisions are identified and given the opportunity to be involved in the development of policies, programs, and projects that are being proposed in their communities. Please read our VLMPO Participation Plan below for more information about our role in transportation planning and public engagement.
